Change

MUSIC: Living Colour

I really did not want to delve into politics with my blog. So forgive me for this one. I just want to say I do not want to dictate how and why you should vote a specific way. I do not care if you believe or not the things that I do. I can have a conversational debate with you. All that I asked is that you do not repeat verbatim the “party” line regardless of which one. I want the conversation to have more depth to it than quick sound bites and name calling. But avoid doing this if you are easily offended.

I hate the way politics are done in this country. And there is not one party that represents me 100%. I would like to join the “I’m American” party for once. There has been a lot of debate on the airwaves lately. It really gets heated every four years when we are electing the President. Every four years I hear the fact that we need, “Change!” However, no one can really define what exactly this “change” needs to be done. The truth is the only “change” that the only change that is going to have an immediate impact on my life is quarters for the laundry machines. And when it comes to “change” I would like more of it. So please LOWER THE TAXES. It is true that we do not understand our own history in this country. America fought for its freedom for one reason. Not that “each man was created equal.” But it was a nice thought. The truth is we were pissed off that the King of England was taxing the shit out of us. (I hate to mention this but I think it is the only thing not taxed in this country. The last of the “revenue stream”.) We just wanted to live our lives without someone telling us what to do. And then making us pay for it.

The other thing that is disturbing about the Presidential election is that they all run on the idea of being a “Uniter”. They will bring us all together. Is that necessarily a good idea? It is like family Holiday get togethers. There is a reason they only happen about 5-6 times a year. The other problem about running on this idea of “unity” is they spend a lot of time “ripping each other a new one”. But you can let the “healing begin” if you do not “wound” the other guy. It is becoming like the oxymoron “Civil War” without the gun fights. Another problem is that none of these candidates stand behind what they say. MEMO: To the candidates. In this modern age of media, when the “replay” of what you have said somewhere is put out then you cannot say you were “misquoted”. You were “caught”. And arguing about “context” is a just poor attempt to “cover your ass”. We know what you said and when. So Cowboy Up!

Let me bring these two points together. I am tired of hearing that is country made this far by just “fucking up” and we have done nothing good. Without us “evil” would not exist in the world. And that is what is pissing Satan off. He was making “evil” a lot earlier than 1776. I know America can seem like a “goofy” place. And makes you wonder how we got to be #1. We are country where obesity is as much of porblem as anorexia. People complain about hunger but food is available on about every third or fourth street corner. There is no health care for people but when there is an emergency those who respond never ask first for an insurance card before trying to save your life. There is nothing but complaints of censorship going on but we now have over 500 channels on TV. I thought the idea of censorship was to limit outlets of information. You can get in most parts a free library card and read whatever you want. There is much more information being put forth than any time before in history. America has come to this point in history by “trial and error”. There has been good and bad times. The challenge of the “experiment of democracy” is that is not meant to be done by lazy people. The culture of America can probably be best explained by that little breaking and entry pest Goldilocks. She went into the bears’ house and everything was too big, too small, too hot, too cold, etc. It was hard for the pest to find something that was “just right” for her. The bears in my opinion should have come home ripped her into large, small, and just right pieces. Dunked those pieces in the porridge and then had a nap.

The worse part of this election year is how much will be spent on it. And people think that talk is cheap. The sad part is that it has less “value” to it for the amount of money. I know there is a huge debate over the costs of things in this country such as energy, health care and the war. And there should be. But no one is saying anything worth the campaign costs. And all the political parties are guilty.

I am not saying I have any answers. But it is strange for me. The more I write. The more questions I have been having. I am trying to figure out this world. So in looking for answers I am reading more than usual. To paraphrase Stephen King again. If you do not have the time to read, you do not have the tools to write. I read a book last week by Kevin Sites who was freelance journalist working for Yahoo.com’s Hot Zone and wrote the book In the Hot Zone based on the experience. He reported on 20 conflicts all around the world in the course of one year. It puts a face on the cost of war by putting a human face on it. It was an eye-opener. If you think the major media outlets are telling you everything that is going on then you are in for a rude awakening with this book. I still do not know why war and its violence is a course of action in this world. It may be necessary but there is a price to it too. I am not sure who said the following. Power is the most addictive drug there is in the world. I know there is a debate going on about the war in Iraq. There is a great debate on the costs and our involvement. And where and when it should be done. After reading this book I could not find one war that has a simple answer to it. And at the same time I cannot say we should never be involved either. The debate is we should never use our military to involve ourselves in the affairs of other countries. I just want to pose this one idea. When you give money to an organization that does work in another country then are you not engaging in some form of foreign policy? It is something to think about.

Another thing you may not think about. The story of a heavy metal band in Baghdad, Iraq. Ideas and practices do exist in place we would never think about.

Heroic Stories is another to check out if you are interested in “human potential”.

It is starting to become even more interesting to be a writer.

I am trying to figure out the “Meaning of Life”

And the state of relations

Reference

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

I have decided to add a new Category into my blog. It is called “Reference”. If there is a book, movie, website that I keep mentioning then it will fall into this new category. This is something that I find must have some significant value if I keep mentioning it. It probably could also be known as an influence. This may also provide some possible insight on “where I am coming from”. (NOTE: The bar or the bathroom is not the answer to this question. At least not at this moment.)

The first one that falls into this new category is from the blog GapingVoid. There is an article posting called How to be Creative that I find myself reading about once a month. So this must be a very reference for me. In this case it is more like a coaching tool. I have also found something new on the site too. There has been a series of podcasts (about 3 so far) that I have found very informative. They are conversations about the Internet, marketing, collaboration and other things. Right now they are topics I am very much interested in as I try to grow my website. Maybe “grow” may a premature term to be using right now. I am really trying to get a grasp on the content and presentation of my website. Here are the links for them Episode 1, Episode 2, Episode 3 if you want to check them out. And by the way I am always looking for podcasts like this to listen to during the work day. It makes me feel productive. At least I am listening to something informative. And it blocks out workplace gossip and people’s stupid cell phone conversations. I also need to be working on the “tools” needed to develop this site when and where I can.

“And this is how I want you to serve it to me”

Monday, March 24th, 2008

This is another posting on the “writing process”. When I am working on the initial brainstorming of an idea to write about I find it is best not to talk about it. It inevitably leads to a conversation I like to call “And this how I want you to serve it to me.” Writing is not like making an order at a fast food joint. I believe it was Stephen King who said that you have to write the first draft with the door closed. The “first draft” conversation with others (especially non writers and people who are not “creative” to begin with) starts becoming argumentative on how their “idea” is the perfect solution to the problem. All I have to do is just write down what is being dictated to me. I am going to let you in on something. I can generate a massive volume of ideas on a writing project. And about 70-80 percent of them I do not use. It is “organic” process for me. It is just not a mechanical process where Tab A goes into Slot B. So I cannot understand why others think their “idea” is automatically going to bat a thousand. It also sets me up for the “assassination” where my ideas are downplayed and ignored. I have learned to translate the code. Examples. When I hear “That’s nice” translates as “I am not interested.” Or “It’s different” means “I don’t get it”. “I haven’t had time to read what you wrote.” is another way to say, “I won’t.” And so on. I think the hardest part of writing is trying to find where the audience is regards to what I have written. It reminds me of the Bugs Bunny cartoon where he is passionately leading the orchestra only to hear the sounds of crickets when he is done. It is a “give and take” process that I have not completely figured out at this time. It is a “balancing act” too. I have to write what I want. But I need some feedback to see what I have written from another perspective. The other part about writing is you cannot tell a person what to create but respond to what has been created. To paraphrase Stephen King the first draft the door is closed but after that it is wide open. I hope the following makes sense. You can’t tell what you want written but you can tell about how what was written worked or not for you. You have to trust the author has something to say and hopefully ends up saying it.

To sum this all up.

I have to accept the writings that I do that “fail” as much as I accept the ones that “succeed.”

I am not sure who said this,” A good writer needs a good bullshit detector.”

And find those willing to test to see if it is working.

Writing is like trying to get out of the corner you painted yourself into.

New Writing Tool

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

I would like to start with an observation here. Do you ever find that when you are in a “hole” and asked for help? The first thing you are handed is a shovel and told to dig yourself out. It is kind of like when you are drowning and the lifeguard reminds you of the importance of staying hydrated during heavy physical exertion. It is just the wrong time for a lecture. And the wrong “tools” for the job.

I bring this up because we live in a time where it seems like most of the people want to buy themselves out of a “jam”. No one wants to work themselves out of it. Work smarter. They seem to throw money at the problem. The problem exists in the plan. It is not necessarily in the funding. But trying telling that to government officials and those in public education. For your safety avoid them when at all possible. Money does not insure quality. Watch Basic Instinct.

I was trying to find an affordable copy of Final Draft program. I realize that I needed a screenwriting tool. I learned a hard lesson in some of my screenwriting reviews. Format counts. I did not realize that a margin or indent than may be off by 1/8 of inch would be a problem. But remember “close” counts in horseshoes, hand grenades, thermonuclear war and the time I missed the tree and peed on my friend’s shoe. I could use the dreaded credit card thus digging into that “hole” just a little more. I was reading my reviews last week. I came across a recommendation for using a free scriptwriting program called Celtx. I was a little hesitant at first. I was thinking if it free than I was getting a low grade version that would wind up frustrating me. And so far, it has not been bad. I am slowly working my way through with it.

I wrote a short script using it. This script was just a short project just to get some ideas out. It is just one scene. Let me say a few things first. I was trying to write something. So I took some inspiration from by surroundings. I am trying to be a better writer. I do own an apartment building. And there four people living there. I am interested in what makes people coexist with each other. I also like stories with a cross section of people in it who under normal circumstances would never be together. I also like attempting to write (and I hope I do) interesting dialogue. I have known people who talk like this. I swear. I also like trying to find balance between comedy and drama. I think they can be interlaced. If you ever have a chance watched a MASH episode on DVD but turn the “laugh track” off. You will see what I mean. I am not sure if this scripted scene will lead to something. As I said I was just trying to write something.

Here is the link for the latest script. And feel free to send me a review.

I have also been re-reading Robert Rodriguez’s “10 Minute Film School”. Learning and Re-learning is a never ending cycle.

Disassemble and Reassemble- Heavy Input Mode

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

Just another day in the relay race of life.

MUSIC: Tool (I like the lyric “I know the pieces fit” in this song. And it is about “design”.)

I know I have not posted in a while. It happens every now and then. It seems lately my “idea hamster” has fallen asleep on the wheel. It just being tossed around and thumping on that wheel. It can be very annoying. After a while it feels like I should be wearing a helmet and licking windows. I just was not inspired to write anything. I did have even enough material in my head to even write a short blog posting.

I had planned one weekend to do nothing but writing. That was the plan. Buffalo NY area was hit by 2 feet of snow. My snow blower was not working right and kept jamming on me. So I had to shovel the driveway by hand. It is not so hard really. But it is still annoying though. The problem is that when it snows like that you have to shovel every few hours to keep up with it. Plus I helped my neighbor when his snow blower broke on him too. The other problem was when it was all over it left about 3-4 inches of ice in the driveway that had to be broken up. That is a very slow process. I was exhausted. And just could not find the energy to type. And I did not what to type anyways.

I have been unsuccessful trying to come up with an idea for this month’s MoviePoet.com contest. I would hate to miss yet another month.

I go through these times of “no good ideas” from time to time. It puts me in what I call “heavy input mode”. I will start reading a lot and watching a lot of movies or TV shows. It is a process of “filling up” my head in the hopes of knocking an idea or two out. I have read a couple of “pulp fiction” novels. I read Robert B. Parker’s latest Spencer novel Now and Then. I also watched the first season of “The Wire”. A note it was created by David Simon. If you take his books Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets (also the basis of the TV series) and The Corner: A Year in the Life of an Inner-City Neighborhood you will see the influences to this series. I also watched the third season of Rescue Me. I think both shows have some interesting and complex characters to them. I may discuss them at another time.

But I also need to have some fun too. The world is just not drama. I found episodes of Mystery Science Theater 3000 online.

The other thing is that I cannot get narrow minded and limit my selections when I am in “heavy input mode”. And a word of advice you should avoid people who are narrow minded. Prime example, a person who only listens to sports news. And let us not forget someone (regardless of which) repeats verbatim the “party line.” These people are “Parrots” repeating. They are not really having a meaningful conversation of any real substance. It gets real bad in major election years.

The other thing I do is load up the MP3 player to listen to at work. I download podcasts from This American Life and MaximumFun. I also found audio clips from a guy named “Dave Rabbit” who was a soldier and pirate radio DJ during the Vietnam War. His show only lasted 21 days before he stopped doing it. (Heard about this by listening to Opie and Anthony Show. I have to give credit where credit is due.) I also found the WFMU radio website. It is a freeform radio station. It means they allow their DJ’s to program their own shows. Imagine that. Creative freedom. A scary idea to have on radio these days. There is a weekly show on each week called 7 Second Delay where the two hosts try to pull a radio stunt off within the hour. Here are some highlights.

I was searching the website of WFMU and I found a “buried treasure”. I know I have a lot of “voices” going on inside my head at any given moment. I think I may have found the soundtrack that goes with the “voices”. It is the audio equivalent of a “car wreck”. Give it a listen. And be open-minded about it. And you may realize why I can’t seem to take it off my MP3 player. And if you come up with a really good explanation on “Why?” PLEASE contact me.
