What Exactly are We Fueling Here?

I was having a semi-productive time with posting and then I hit the wall. Nothing major. I had a “crazier” than normal schedule last week that caught up with me. Take last Saturday for example. I was trying to get somethings done but I was really dragging ass around my place. So I decided to take a “power nap” around 2-3:00. The plan was to take about an hour or so and then get up, grab a meal and go back at it. That WAS the plan. I hit my bed and did not wake up until 3:30 in the morning. Still do not know how that happened.

I have always had “odd” sleep habits. It is hard to get going in the morning. It is then hard to wind down at the end of night. My brain seems to take longer to get into gear in the morning.  I am not a morning person. And if you are a “morning person” then please “Fuck off” and keep that to yourself. I need a kick-start in the morning. I have 2 cups of coffee in the morning and then try to not have anymore during the day. I do not drink colas anymore. (Just had to work briefly at a “Nationally Known Cola Beverage Company”  to break that habit. I saw how it was made and that was worse than knowing how hotdogs were made. Everything that went into it had “BIOHAZARD WARNINGS” on it. Even the water tank. I am NOT Kidding.)

I need my coffee in the morning.

Before I start on the next part. Let me say the “friend” involved here does have a legitimate medical reason for not being able to consume any form of caffeine. However, that is not an excuse for his behavior.

He drinks “decaf” coffee. And it is embarrassing. One time we went into a Starbucks. I ordered my usually large caffeine coffee that if there is ever a need it could be used as a substitute for motor oil. He ordered his decaf. The girl behind the countered paused a moment and said, “It is going to be 5-10 minutes because I have to brew a pot”. So we have to wait. And he would not go along with my “Your shit out of luck. Let’s go.” However, in her pause I read he subliminal thoughts on it. She was thinking, “Really? I have to brew a pot that nobody else is going to order. Then the manager in about an hour will be on my ass to dump the pot because it is no longer “fresh” and it is another pot for me to clean. And to add insult you probably will put NOTHING in the tip jar.” My subliminal thought was, “Why does it feel I should be wearing ‘I’m with this asshole’ t-shirt?”

He goes almost every night now to a coffee-house to work on his disstertation. And has his “decaf”. I want to go there one night with a bull-horn and call his ass out. Hopefully, the other “real” coffee drinkers will shame him into leaving. Too bad “tar and feathering” is not longer practiced these days.

Then I began thinking about our current “Energy Drink Craze”. What exactly is it fueling? And what are the results? I mean coffee and alcohol has fuel the minds behind many creative outputs over the centuries. However, I have yet to hear any credit given to “energy drinks”. The only thing, I have ever heard is the term “Extreme” with these products.  It may be good for the “X-Games Events”. But for the rest of our society being “charged into extreme” is surely not a good idea. In fact, I may be even willing to declare them as the Official Ingredient for “The Recipe for Disaster”. I remember guys who were “wired” on Mountain Dew (aka “The Elixir of The Bo-Tard”)and all they did was to perform like dumb asses. I remember buying 2 liters of Jolt Cola when I was teenager. It was cola that stated “All the sugar and twice the caffeine”. All it meant was staying up late and bouncing off the walls of my friend’s basement listening to thrash metal. I think about all that “juiced-up” time and thought about what I accomplished while on them. The truth, I did nothing that would ever confuse me with the efforts of a “rocket scientist”. Now a days, if you want to hear shitty music at a bar then go to one that advertises in the window “Red Bull and Vodka” as the special. “5 Hour Energy” drink with the 8-10 hour work is just a marketing scheme to get you to buy more and take more than you should.

It is as comedian Christopher Titus said about why other countries should not mess with the United States.

I think as consumers people need to exercise even more caution when it comes to this convenient store fuel source.
