Optimizing the Kindle Fire Experience

It is yet another New Year. There is one thing that I have to do a better job of. That is I need to be more protective about my writing time. And also about the sources that fuel it. I am also not going to “burn too many calories” with people who cannot understand that

For Christmas, I got a Kindle Fire from my family. It was the “Christmas Miracle” for me. I had sent them a link directly to what I wanted. However, it was not a guarantee that I would even get it. In the past, I had made a lot of lists of things that I have never received. I also come from a family that is almost borderline Amish when it comes to technology. But I have to give them credit on coming through this year. This is the first electronic item that they have bought since the hot air popcorn popper they bought me the first Christmas after I had moved out of the house all those years ago.

I am experimenting with the Kindle to make it a productive tool for me. The first thing, I learned was I had to get the power adapter for it. The USB cable was way too slow of a method to recharge it. Amazon should really sell it with the unit. I had to go to several locations locally trying to find it. It reminded me why stores like for example Best Buy is not the best source for “customer support”. And I am going to leave it at that.

Also get a cover for it as soon as possible. Amazon sent me 40% code for one the day after I registered it online.

If you own a Kindle Fire and if you have any tips or tricks to make it work better please share them.

I am getting use to reading books on it. I am also looking for new sources for books. The local library and Amazon Prime have some titles that I can borrow for it. However, I am looking for other sources for books. I am also looking for new authors too who may only be publishing via the e-book format.

There is the Free Kindle Books and Tips app to see what may be available.

I am also looking for apps that will help me to be more productive. I will not be loading any games on to it. It is too easy when I am having a “block” moment to get lost in playing games. I have put the app for Netflix and Amazon streaming though. So there is enough temptation but during the day my Internet Hot-Spot is intermittent at best. I also have the app for Public Radio and TED so I can explore different ideas from time to time.

I did find one called InkPad to use to make notes. The one thing I learned was I had to turn off the AutoCorrect on the keyboard function. It was correcting almost everything like website addresses that I noted for later.

Astrid Tasks is another one I am getting use to get better organize when it comes to getting things done. I need to be better with the reminders.

I do not want to go too crazy with the apps. I am just looking for one that can help with being more productive especially towards the output via my website. It is just not about having access to information and resources but being able to apply them.

So any please pass along any tricks, tips or resources for the Kindle Fire.
